Yesterday morning, on the way to work, I was talking with a nearby ham who is 2/3 of the way to DXCC on 40 meters mobile -- CW. Like me, he prefers CW to phone. He waited for a lull in a round-robin CW QSO a few years back, and sent his call, only to hear someone key "Well, let's let the lid in. Bet he can't send or copy at our speed" or some similar nasty comment.

He came back at 'em at 40 wpm, and had no trouble at all keeping up with them. It seems that his being a Navy CW operator for a long, long time had burnished those skills to a bright, shiny surface that none of the other folks in that round-robin could match.

We all need to keep firmly in mind that any derogatory comment can turn someone away from this hobby, which is a real shame. We need to _GROW_ our numbers, not shrink them.
