Sam and Andy - An Oldtimers' Tale

Sam and Andy were both avid hams and CW OPs. They became good friends and ragchewed with each other for years, and met in person from time to time at hamfests and club meetings. They were both getting on in years and at one of these eyeball QSO's Sam asked Andy if he thought there would be ham radio in heaven. They speculated on this for a few minutes and both agreed that it would be disappointing if there wasn't. A couple of 807's later they both made a solemn pact whichever of them was first to become a Silent Key would do his best to let the other know if there was or wasn't ham radio in heaven.

Only a few months after this chat Andy died. Sam travelled to Andy's home town to attend his funeral and said his last farewell to his old friend. Sam was a little depressed and didn't get on the air for days after the funeral. Eventually though, he dusted of the bug and slapped out a CQ. He hadn't given any thought to their agreement and it was quite a shock when Sam heard Andy's call come back out of the ether. The signal had kind of a wavery note too, unlike anything Sam could recall. It sure sounded like Andy's fist, though!
